Buying a used gearbox: manual, automatic and DSG

Gearbox failure usually strikes without warning – slipping gears, juddering when shifting, limp mode. A replacement gearbox is then often the fastest and cheapest solution. Here you will find manual gearboxes with 5 and 6 speeds, torque-converter automatics such as the Mercedes 7G-Tronic or ZF 8HP, and dual-clutch gearboxes such as the VW DSG, Audi S tronic, Renault EDC or Ford PowerShift – used with stated mileage, professionally reconditioned, or new. All gearboxes are tested before dispatch; used and reconditioned units come with a 12-month warranty, new ones with 24 months.

Gearboxes by make

Volkswagen gearboxes make up the largest part of our stock, followed by Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Ford, Opel, Renault and BMW. Each make page shows the gearbox codes currently in stock:

These codes and series are currently the most common in our stock – click one to see all matching gearboxes:

We have dedicated guides on the best-known series: DQ381 gearbox, DQ200 problems, 7G-Tronic 722.9, 722.6 gearbox and ZF 8HP gearbox – and on symptoms and causes in general: DSG gearbox problems.

The gearbox code decides

Whether a gearbox fits is determined by the gearbox code – it defines ratios, control unit, connections and software. With VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda it is three code letters on the data sticker (e.g. NHW, SSP), with Mercedes the gearbox number on the type plate (e.g. 722.906), with BMW a code such as GA8HP45Z, with Ford, Fiat or Nissan the part number on the housing. Compare the code with our product title or send us your VIN – we will check which gearbox fits.

Core deposit, shipping and fitting

On gearboxes we charge a core deposit of usually €250, added to your order automatically and refunded once your old gearbox is returned (Core deposit explained). Gearboxes are shipped securely packed by freight carrier; collection in Nortmoor is possible by arrangement. With DSG and automatic gearboxes the workshop has to adapt the control unit to the vehicle after fitting – allow for this.

Frequently asked questions about replacement gearboxes

How much does a replacement gearbox cost?

The price is shown on each gearbox and depends on type (manual, automatic, dual-clutch), mileage and condition. A core deposit (usually €250) is added and refunded once we receive your old gearbox.

Used or reconditioned – which is better?

A used gearbox with low mileage is the economical solution; a reconditioned gearbox has been professionally overhauled and is the choice where there are known weak points, such as DSG mechatronics or the 7G-Tronic control plate. Both come with a 12-month warranty, new gearboxes with 24 months.

Does an automatic gearbox need to be coded?

Yes. After fitting a DSG, S tronic or torque-converter automatic the workshop has to adapt the control unit to the vehicle (adaptation / basic setting). Without this step the gearbox will not shift cleanly.

Will a gearbox from another model fit?

If the gearbox code matches, yes – also across brands within a group (VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda, Renault/Dacia/Nissan, Peugeot/Citroën/Opel). If the code does not match, ratios or control unit usually will not fit.

How is the gearbox delivered?

Securely packed by freight carrier, or you collect it in Nortmoor (Germany). After the swap you return the old gearbox to us and we refund the deposit.
