In stockBuying a replacement engine: used, reconditioned or new
Engine failure is no reason to write off the car. A replacement engine usually costs a fraction of a new vehicle – and often less than repairing the old engine. With us you have the choice: used engines with stated mileage from our stock, reconditioned engines that have been professionally overhauled, and new engines with 0 km. All three are tested before dispatch; used and reconditioned engines come with a 12-month warranty, new engines with 24 months – no mileage limit. Which option makes sense for your vehicle is explained in Used or remanufactured engine?.

The engine code decides
Whether a replacement engine fits is decided not by the model but by the engine code: with VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda it is three code letters (e.g. CHZ, DAU), with Mercedes a six-digit engine number (e.g. 651.921), with BMW a code such as B48B20B, with Renault, Dacia and Nissan a combination such as K9K 636. You will find it stamped into the engine block, on the data sticker in the service book or on the type plate. Compare the code with our product title – or send us your VIN and we will check which engine fits. In detail: Finding your engine code.
Core deposit, shipping and fitting
On every engine we charge a core deposit of usually €500. The deposit is added to your order automatically and refunded once your old engine is returned – this keeps the cycle of engines going (Core deposit explained). Engines are shipped securely packed on a pallet by freight carrier; collection in Nortmoor is possible by arrangement. Fitting is done by your workshop – what to look out for is in our checklist Engine replacement checklist.
Frequently asked questions about replacement engines
How much does a replacement engine cost?
The price is shown on each engine and depends on make, engine family, mileage and condition. A core deposit (usually €500) is added and refunded once we receive your old engine. Fitting is charged separately by your workshop.
What is the difference between a used and a replacement engine?
"Replacement engine" means any engine that replaces the faulty one – used, reconditioned or new. A used engine comes from another vehicle and is tested but not dismantled; a reconditioned engine has been professionally overhauled; a new engine has 0 km. You will find all three here, and the condition is stated on each item.
How do I find the right engine?
Via the engine code: enter it in the search box above or click your make. If the code matches, the engine fits. If in doubt, send us your VIN and we will check for you.
What warranty is there?
12 months on used and reconditioned engines, 24 months on new engines – no mileage limit, provided the engine is fitted professionally by a workshop. Details on our warranty page.
How is the engine delivered?
Securely packed on a pallet by freight carrier, or you collect it in Nortmoor (Germany). After the swap you return the old engine to us and we refund the deposit.
